Exciting Updates!

Hello there! You look amazing today (I can see you through the front-facing camera)! I hope this unspecified web content finds you in good health and good spirits. I have a few things I want to tell you about!  I hope you’re sitting down for this one. You are? Great.  …Please sit down. You’re forgetting I can see you.

Ok, awesome. Thanks for finally being honest, and please – no more of those shenanigans. MY DEBUT ALBUM “QUEEN OF SMALL TOWN GOSSIP” IS ON ITUNES AND OTHER DIGITAL OUTLETS NOW!!!  Even better news: YOU CAN PURCHASE IT BY CLICKING ON THIS LINK: https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/album/queen-of-small-town-gossip/1449901163?mt=1&app=itunes ! (Or on Amazon here! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MX7874F/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_5.qvCbVYA96KJ)

img_4502The album was recorded back east in Pittsburgh in late December 2018 and was a surprise sellout (standing room only?!  Thanks for coming through!).  Super proud of this thing from start to finish.  If you haven’t bought your copy, please do!  And if you have, I owe you a hug the next time I see you (because I love you but I have no money).

I’ve been working some of this material for a while and figured I would dare myself to a new challenge and achieve something new, and it worked!  Never been more proud.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

I was blown away by the reception – I got a message the day after releasing it, telling me that it charted!  It peaked at #2 in its first full day of release!  I couldn’t believe my eyes, so I started ugly crying immediately.  Still in absolute shock over it.  So thankful!

If you’re in LA, I’ve got a show coming up Saturday, January 26 as an album release show at the Lyric Hyperion theater in Silver Lake.  You won’t want to miss that one.  I’ve got great local talent booked like Jared Goldstein (Out on Stage), Jessica Lee Williamson (The MothI’m Dying Up Here), and UCB Messhall team Jason Bjorn. You can grab your tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/david-montgomery-queen-of-small-town-gossip-tickets-55099657559

Here’s a snippet of video from the live album:

ridesharecoverI want to quickly plug an “anonymous” thing I’ve been writing… My old day job was driving for a certain rideshare company, which made me hate my life every single day.  Tragedy + Time = Comedy, so I started blogging about my misadventures.  I decided to start compile more of the stories and break them up into volumes to test the waters…. And we’ve got some doozies in Volume 1!  Without further ado, I present to you: Rideshare Storytime: Volume 1, now available in paperback and for your Kindle on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Rideshare-Storytime-Taxi-Cab-Confessions/dp/1795382627/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1549078950&sr=8-1&keywords=rideshare+storytime.  Hope you enjoy!  Volume 2 coming very soon!

img_16862018 was a year of new heights yet again.  Aside from recording my first ever live album of standup and storytelling, I managed to check off a lot of other things on my list that I’ve always wanted to do professionally.  One of them was performing a new solo show at Upright Citizens Brigade about my time with the Spice Girls – appropriately titled It’s A Spice World, We’re Just Living In It.  It came with some crudely altered promotional artwork.  It felt amazing to re-work the story I’ve toured with so relentlessly and just have some brand new fun with it.  It ended with me in drag performing my coup d’etat: mimicking the great Posh Spice’s exact performance in the girls’ debut “Wannabe” video… Which if you’ve seen it… Yeah, she doesn’t do much in it.  But damn is she fabulous.

The show was great, and was very well attended, but I was very excited when it was over!  In the weeks surrounding the show, I had been to Sioux Falls, Northampton, and even Stockholm, Sweden to perform with The Moth.  What a life, huh?

I’ve also started a fun new chapter:  hosting for The Moth on tour.  This has been a dream of mine ever since I first stepped on the tiniest of Moth stages.  I debuted as a Mainstage host in Boston and was lucky enough to be flown the next day to my home town of Pittsburgh to host their Grandslam Championship competition.  What an absolute dream!  It can’t be overstated, how much The Moth has changed my life.   I am eternally grateful.img_3175

Have you got a story you’d like to workshop?  Well, I’ve started coaching storytelling!  Click the “contact” button to inquire about rates.  I do this in-person or via Skype, so you don’t have to live in LA to make it happen!

img_9175I’m still performing around LA quite a bit as well.  I’ve done shows with some of my heroes and favorites recently (doing one alongside the goddess Aparna Nancherla was a nice birthday treat for me this year)!img_3672  I continue to pinch myself every time I get booked for one of these shows.  Just last night I graced the stage at UCB to tell a story at an amazing show called Sunday Night Sex Talks (if you’re ever in LA, please check this out.  Always sells out, and always is amazing).

Thank you all for being right next to me during this journey.  More updates soon, I promise.  I hope to see all of you in some city soon.  In the meantime, the most heartfelt thanks for all of your support.  It means the absolute world to me.  Love you all.

Fringes and Risks and Moths and Gays AND A LIVE EPISODE OF MY SHOW!

13439092_1005302956205152_7572390251104092723_n

Long time, no see!  Have you lost weight?  Whatever you’re doing, you look good.  Me?  I’ve been mega busy.  Where to start, where to start… Since I last touched base, I’ve been lucky enough to do huge13346712_980413048936_1729737194878028595_n Moth Mainstage sho13100792_968013038656_7867883281114781263_nws in Boston and East Lansing, MI.  Always such a treat to be on the road with some of the warmest hearts in the nation.  And I got to work with one of my favorite people in storytelling… The absolutely adorable and mega-talented Tara Clancy.  (PS – her book comes out in October but you can preorder it now.  I suggest you all do that.)

I’12998648_965878216856_8979331860957591821_nm thrilled to report that Fringe went great… I won the Audience Choice Award at the Pittsburgh Fringe Festival for my one man show, How The Queen Found His Crown.  By the time that weekend was over, I was extremely 12991015_966586183086_5676674998605037073_n-2thankful to put that show back into a cardboard box in my closet.  Talk about emotional exhaustion!  Putting myself and my life out there in that capacity was certainly rewardingbut taxing.  Huge thanks to everyone who came and saw it though – that was such a great turnout and such a supportive group of hearts.

I’ve gotten to try out some physical hosting duties which I admittedly was very nervous about, but wish I wasn’t, in 13007372_1676210589297664_8305328234598432440_nhindsight.  First, The Moth asked me to host their monthly Storyslam here in Pittsburgh in April.  While I obviously love attention, and the idea of being onstage through the entirety of the show, it was a daunting task:  Their monthly host here, Alan Olifson, has been literally the only person to ever host it, for almost 5 years.  I figured they’d revolt!  But the audience was very receptive to my sense of humor and luckily, I didn’t have to riff off of too many suicide stories that night, so I’d file that one in the “success” drawer.

Just a few weeks I was the guest host and monologist of Arcade Comedy Theater’s “Hootenanny” show, the annual Pri13427939_981091668976_2727140253438382705_nde edition.  This is an Armando style show, so for all you non-nerds out there – basically someone
shouts out a word or phrase and I have to come up with some (hopefully entertaining) stories from my life based off of that word.  Then the improvisers (which included some of my local favorites – Missy Moreno, Jerome Fitzgerald, Kyle Longsdorf, Kristy Nolen, too much talent to name them all!) act out spur-of-the-moment scenes based off of the details of what I’ve just come up with.  They do scenes, I tell more stories, then scenes, then stories.  It was a fucking blast.  No words to describe how much fun that night was.

In mid June, I traveled to Philadelphia to perform a newly workshopped story for the Risk! podcast, which aired today.  13423890_982898752566_3238287332764788834_nI covered some deep stuff in it, but I (hopefully) managed to keep it light and funny.  Always fun to work out a new story in front of such a supportive audience.  And Kevin Allison, my absolute hero – such a gift to work with him every single time.

SPEAKING OF FUN!  If you’re in Pittsburgh, mark your calendars for July 29, at 8pm.  At Arcade Comedy Theater downtown, I am putting on a LIVE taping of an episode of my podcast, 2 Gays, No Girls, At A Pizza Place!  I won’t reveal too much, but there will be TONS of character improv work in this episode.  Nik Nemec will be back for this one, and I’ve secured the absolutely absurd Missy Moreno!  Tickets are only $10 but get them asap, as this is a small theater!

I have less than 10 weeks before I move to Los Angeles.  Terrified?  Yes, sir.  Yes, I am.  Ready for the next chapter?  Without a doubt.  Thanks for being here for the ride so far.

All my love,

David

Risk!, The Moth Mainstage, #2gaysnogirls

Still having to pinch myself over the last few months.  I’ve made it onto the Risk podcast two more times after doing a live show for them in New York.  You can download the episodes “Live From New York!” and “It’s Complicated.”  So thankful to the genius Kevin Allison for including me in these.  It’s such an honor.

Speaking of Kevin Allison, he was a recent guest on my show, “2 Gays, No Girls, At A Pizza Place” when I was in New York!  He was hilarious, and I’ve been lucky enough to snag a slew of other comedy geniuses that you’d likely know from the UCB stages of NYC and LA, plus podcasts like Comedy Bang Bang and Spontaneanation.  We’ve had episodes with author David Crabb (Bad Kid), Pam Murphy (improv4humansComedy Bang! Bang!), Colleen Smith (The Groundlings, Spontaneanation), Drew Droege (Chloe Sevigny series on Youtube), David Wain (The StateWet Hot American SummerAnother Period).  Upcoming guests include Jeff Hiller and Jordan Firstman, and many more!

This week I had the extreme pleasure of performing at The Moth Mainstage in Pittsburgh.  I told a story about quitting my job to follow the Spice Girls on their reunion tour, to a sold out crowd of over 1300 people.  What an unbelievable rush.  Apparently Girl Power is still alive and well!  I still can’t begin on how thankful I am for all the support the past few months.  If you’ve seen me perform, listened to my podcast, watched one of my videos, you are a huge force in helping me thrive.  THANK YOU!

Thanks for reading, and hope to see you all soon!

2 Gays, No Girls, At A Pizza Place: A Podcast

I have a lot going on these days!  So let me catch you guys up a little…

TODAY MY PODCAST IS UP!  It is the first official episode of “2 Gays, No Girls, At A Pizza Place.”  It’s a passion project for me because I love pizza and hate fag hags.  I get to do a lot of improv characters on the show, which is a blast for me.  I co-host it with Nik Nemec, who is a lot of fun to interact with on and off the show.  Go check out episode one, entitled “Madonna DiGiorno” at http://soundcloud.com/buymeahotdog.  And like us on facebook at http://facebook.com/2gaysnogirls.

Also I will be performing at Wordplay for a second time.  This is SUCH a fun show.  Host and producer Alan Olifsen gets a musical setlist to add to your story and a live dj plays it behind the storyteller.  How much better can storytelling get???  The show is Friday April 10 at Bricolage Theater in downtown Pittsburgh.  Get your tickets here:  https://bricolagepgh.secure.force.com/ticket/#sections_a0FE000000D4bTvMAJ

Plus I won the Moth storyslam again!  I performed at the Grandslam for the first time ever, and unfortunately got picked to go first… So I ended up scoring REALLY high, which was quite validating.  Didn’t get beat until the 7th or 8th person went up.  That was on a Thursday – then the following Tuesday I performed at the regular Moth storyslam and I won again!

Anyway kiddos, thanks for reading….. Catch you up again soon.  Have many more videos of my stories ordered that are heading your way soon!

Naivete, a gun, and the Spice Girls. My story is on this week’s episode of the RISK! podcast!

Click here to listen to MY STORY on this week’s episode of Risk!, hosted and curated by the brilliant Kevin Allison.  It is such a dream of mine to be on this show and to have worked with Kevin professionally.  This guy has been a comedy hero of mine since my teenage years.  His most notable tv work was the sketch comedy show “The State” on MTV in the mid-90s.  This show is the absolute cornerstone of my sense of humor.  Kevin started Risk several years ago and when I discovered it, I was enthralled.  His uncanny ability to find such gifted storytellers and workshop their stories to be performed live or in-studio as such incredible pieces is truly an art.  They run the gamut – from inspiring to raunchy to hilarious to sad… This show truly has something for everyone, as long as you don’t mind a little coarse language 😉

I’m the first storyteller, with a story called “Spice Justice,”  in which I am mugged at gunpoint and justice isn’t served through normal channels… So the Spice Girls serve justice in a tacit, implicit way ;).  I hope you enjoy listening.  If you’re interested and are new to his show, click through older episodes and check out a “Best Of” episode to give yourself a good idea of what it’s like.  It is THE best podcast on the air today.  Subscribe in itunes here.

“British for a Night” live at the Moth Storyslam (snippet)

This is a clip of me from last night’s The Moth Storyslam show in Pittsburgh, PA.  To give you some context, I was invited to a very fancy wine tasting gala with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was nervous about coming across as a hillbilly.  So I decided to become British for the night, at the very last minute.  And it worked!  Until I was accosted by a white trash millionaire who was trying to get me to have a threesome with her husband. Full video will hopefully surface in a few weeks. 🙂
